Sorry if this has been asked already, but if all the state trees are supposed to be on the list, why aren't Redwood and Baldcypress on there, when they are the state trees of California and Louisiana?

Um, Redwood and Baldcypress aren't on the national list.

I believe (s)he means that the state trees (each state has a tree) are supposed to be on the national list but they aren't.

Yes, I know they are not on the national list, but what I want to know is why (they aren't on it).

Being a "State Tree" has no bearing on a tree being put on the National List.

Then why would they put kukui, wich is not described in either book nor is even found on the continental U.S., other than the fact that it is the State Tree of Hawaii.

The probably want some sort of representative tree native to Hawaii because Hawaii also participates in Science Olympiad and most of the trees' range is in the 48 contiguous states. However, this might be a better question to ask the authorities.

Does anyone know what "mell" is? The Native Americans made mell from the acorns of the Northern Red Oak. I'm confused.
