Would adding treads from a separate VEX kit to my Vexplorer robot count as a functional modification?

Possibly..
Do you have any documentation that otherwise, it would not be able to perform a task that it now can?

The issue of what is a modification or not has been discussed fairly extensively on this forum already, at least as much as you can given this forum is NOT official.

I suggest you look back up the chain and find that. It will give an expanded version of what UQOnyx suggests.

I am Having trouble getting some of the things (the ping-pong-balls and battery located in the corner) does anyone know of a way to speed these things up? I am using one of the vex claw kit things.
Practice. If practice isn't making it perfect, improvise until it is.

Practice.

I've seen a mildly modified Vex claw bot run a 2:01 without rolling a ball. She could have shaved 15-20sec off of her time with some refinements.

That's a good time. Most of our runs are around 2-2:15.
but our
3rd best: 1:47
2nd best: 1:41
BEST: 1:32!

Me and my partner are trying a new approach of picking stuff up with a new part. The first time we did it we got 2:11. State is on 4/18, so we still have time to shave it down.

Trick is not to use the claw to grab them, use special tools held by the claw. Much, MUCH faster and more consistent/reliable.
Will leave the precise solution to you to respect the teams I saw doing it.
From what anyone at an open tournament could see:
Hint, one way opening.
Hint, magnets.
Hint, the solution is NOT complicated. I love crude but elegant answers in SO. Pretty/refined comes later.

And practice ALWAYS helps.

Separate help on saving time. Don't repeat motions unless needed. Pickup 4 batteries, transfer to box. Don't pick up battery, transfer to box, pick up battery, transfer to box, repeat...
