Re: Disease Detective B/C
Definitely know how to calculate prevalence and incidence. Also, although equations like natality are easy, you want to know them too.
I would think unpasteurized milk would be campylobacter as well: http://www.cdc.gov/foodsafety/rawmilk/r ... html#risks

Re: Disease Detective B/C
Thanks for the tip! Oh, the exact question is:
Which of the following pathogens is most often associated with raw milk, and unpasteurized soft cheese?
A. Campylobacter
B. Listeria
C. Salmonella
D. Vibrio
In this case, would it be Listeria instead of Campylobacter?

Re: Disease Detective B/C
Yeah i think it would definitely be listeria, that's the only disease i know associated with soft cheeses. But Campylobacter can be caused by unpasteurized milk too.

Yeah, I also know Listeria is associated with soft cheeses, but it's annoying, because when you went to the cdc page linked a couple posts up and clicked through a couple pages, you found a statistics sheet, and Campylobacter was associated in 54% of cases, as opposed to Listeria, which was way less. They probably meant, as quoted above, that which one was most commonly linked to milk, yogurt, and soft cheeses, as opposed to how we all took it, which was the most common percentage-wise in terms of illnesses caused by Campylobacter in unpasteurized milk. Yeah, I know I'm long-winded. =)

Re: Disease Detective B/C
Take a gander at that link to the CDC posted back a little bit for a pretty good list. I would say that Salmonella, E.Coli, Retrovirus, and Botulism are most commonly seen.EpicFailure wrote:Generally, what are the most common diseases that we should know about?

Re: Disease Detective B/C
Also, there are lists in the training handout of Microbe Mission that give some pretty good ones.
Ebola, cryptosporidiuum, staphylococcus, west nile virus, malaria, any type of "worm", common flu, and athlete's foot are also seen a lot.

Ebola should be the easiest to identify. Once you see it, you don't forget it.havenguy wrote:Also, there are lists in the training handout of Microbe Mission that give some pretty good ones.

Has anyone ever seen a section about famous epidemiologists on a test?

Yes. Snow and Jenner are fairly common.havenguy wrote:Has anyone ever seen a section about famous epidemiologists on a test?
