We're using activated charcoal to remove food coloring from water, so we need to place the water and charcoal in a plastic baggie and shake it for a while.

Pour the charcoal and water through a coffee filter (you might have to do this more than once).

Pet shops. Fish filters use activated charcoal. If you can't find activated charcoal there, try asking for activated carbon, which is another name for it.
