Parasitic worms are part of added diseases for Nationals, so I suppose they're fair game.
At competitions other than Nationals, though? I often seem to get National-level material in invitationals...
Well I know for invitational events, National level stuff is allowed on tests. But at states or regionals, they're not really supposed to put that on there, but you never know.

I was just frusterated because this was a regional tournament and we ended up getting fourth in microbe, and I didn't see anywhere in the rules where we had to identify live specimens of any of the diseases (I thought it was just treatments/preventions/pathogens/general info about them) but I guess you should still be prepared for anything... Thanks for clearing that up guys

If you've had your Regional, have they been giving the same, similar, or completely different tests to divisions B/C?
Go to the wiki and use the test exchange. :ugeek:
I went whale watching once. It was very similar to watching a group of dissapointed people on a boat.

I've had national-level questions on tests in almost every event I've taken - they're often used as tie-breakers.

National level questions are fair game in invitationals I think but not in regionals or states. However, some questions are marked as "state/national" so are not supposed be on regional but any other competition is fair game. I think if you found national level questions on regional/state tests you can formally complain for the question to not count in scoring. Not sure, though.

Well...you can complain, but that doesn't always mean that they'll throw out the event or throw out the questions that shouldn't have been there. Last year's State Anatomy test had National material on it (parts of the skull, I think it was), so some of the teams appealed to the people running the competition, to either throw out the event or not score the national-level questions. They were told that "everyone would be at the same disadvantage" having to answer national-level questions on a state test, so the scoring wouldn't be adjusted.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Miscommunication through our team led me to believe that the regional competition was in May!

Now I have to study like crazy for Microbe Mission.

Since my time is limited, I can only study so much.

My question:

Is the information in 2011 Microbe Mission - Training handout enough for me to know so I'm not clueless while doing the event?

If you're pressed for time and want to learn as much as possible in a very short amount of time, the training handout or a Sparknotes would be idea.

Wow. That's quite the misunderstanding - I'm sorry.

I was in your situation at my last invitational, except that I didn't know I was going to be in that event until the night before, so I had to spend all night cramming. I looked at the training handout, and unfortunately, I have to tell you that it really didn't help me much. It's a good overview, though, so I'd look at that first before studying anything else.

If you want a really good source, look here: http://www.microbiologytext.com/index.p ... &book_id=4

It's a great source for the different types of microbes. If you have time to study anything else, look at your different types of microscopes and the other links on the Science Olympiad website. There are some great ones there.

Frankly, I think you have enough time, unless you have a lot of other activities or events. Good luck! :P

wow, that is actually a pretty great site.
and I personally would worry about your notes bc you can study while you do them. :)
and i have found this event to be microscope heavy and don't forget the habitats!!! :)
good luck cramming!!
No matter what the experiment's result, there will always be someone eager to:(a) misinterpret it(b) fake it, or (c) believe it supports his own pet theory.
