Two field guides? You're only allowed one for most competitions (Nationals being the exception).

Most people recommend either the Sibley, Peterson, or Smithsonian. There's a list on the Ornithology Wiki that details the pros/cons of each one.

Edit: Apparently you are allowed to bring two field guides...my bad.

I actually think you can have two. In the rules it says, with bolded words included, "Each student may bring one commercially published book (or field guide)". I guess you + your partner = two students, so if each student can bring one you can have two total.

Yeah - they changed the wording from the rules last year. Now you can have two field guides and two pages of notes.
ornithology, forestry, entomology, triple E, green generation, water quality, dynamic planet (lakes & rivers), awesome aquifers, meteorology, robot arm, write it do it. :)

Haha I see I've started a new conversation... and which field guides would contain more useful info?

Check out the guide section of the Wiki. It goes through the pros and cons of each. Or you can just go to a bookstore or library and look at different kinds, then pick your favorite from there.

I'd just like to share that I found the lecture notes for an ornithology course here, and it looks like it could be useful.

I don't think so. The guy who did it wasn't thinking, and he feels pretty bad about it now.

Yea cuz what aggravated me most about that was that I actually am from New York but I assumed he would use the National List. Is there anyway to find out for sure? I don't want to use the wrong list again!

I'm pretty sure. I talked to him about it last month. If you want to confirm, though, ask the Athens people to ask him.
