Do a Google News for "Spore DRM". There's a class-action suit going on over it and the bloggers/journalists are having a field day..theoneandonly wrote:Has anyone played Spore yet? I was thinking about buying it, but I'd like to hear some reviews first.
Take that as you will...The Federal Court filing that was submitted reads; Sony's SecuROM DRM program "is installed without notice and cannot be uninstalled, even if you uninstall Spore," and it "prevents the computer from operating under certain circumstances and/or disrupting hardware operations.
It may be a good/interesting game, but I don't support SecuROM games.
I hear it is fun though.
This DRM debate is a lot like the thing where Sony BMG was distributing rootkits on their music CDs to try to prevent copying, if you were aware of that.
In addition to a bunch of class action stuff against Sony BMG in that, the Federal Trade Commission determined that they had broken federal law (http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2007/01/sony.shtm) and issued several requirements along with requiring Sony to pay up to $150 for computer damages if it happened as a result of their DRM "protection".
