How we can build the brakes... In our design we would have to cut out half our car on the inside to do the brakes
If you haven't seen it, here's a nice explanation and video of how wingnut braking works. Aside from rolling smoothly, braking is pretty much the most important function of the car. If it's not easy to modify your current design to have brakes, it might be better to adopt a more conventional design. (form follows function)

Most people are probably going for the maximum 2kg, since that gives the most gravitational potential energy that can be used to accelerate the car.
Thank you my partner and i said it looks great and we greatly appreciate your help. How much is a kg anyway?

It is around 4.4 lbs. Also this forum, yes it is to help out each other and debate our own interpretation of the rule, but we can not spoon feed you all the answers. It is the same as if you parent is an engineer, yes you should ask for help but they should not design and build your project. It defeats the purpose of this event. You can easily google "convert 2kg to lbs" and find out your answer. So try to figure out things on your own when it is something simple.

Just a heads up Jacobxc meant 2.2lbs. 2kg ~ 4.4 lbs.

What are the best brake and launching systems people are using? Im worried that with a ramp, tape might not be enough

I would advise to go read the whole scrambler wiki page it should help a lot and I would say it is better to stay away from ramps they are very debatable

P.S. Your answer is the wingnut braking system and pulley sytem.

Can anyone think of a reason why the thickness of the backstop is specified to the nearest 0.01 cm? My 1/2" plywood measures 1.22 cm, and if we laminate it up to 1.27 cm then it arguably isn't "built of a rigid material." Are judges really going to pull out a micrometer and 2nd tier people whose backstop is a fraction of a millimeter too thick or too thin? Do we have to find something that measures more than 1.27 cm and sand it down to 1.27, making sure that it is perfectly 1.27 cm at every point? Likewise, why does the dowel have to be mounted to the top center of the backstop? Since the backstop itself can be mounted anywhere on the front of the vehicle, this does nothing to ensure it passes between the photogates even if the vehicle itself travels in a perfectly straight line. Both of these rules seem arbitrary to me. The second is not a big deal, but the first one clearly is a potential headache.

ANSWER #1: The only reason it say 1.27cm is for that fact it is Science competition and the scientific world works off of metric. The proctors are only looking for it to be 1/2 inch.
ANSWER #2: It says the middle of the backstop so put it in the middle of the backstop. It is a "Because I said so" rule.

Has anyone competed in this event yet?

I'm quite curious as to how it is set up. Do you run the vehicle towards all wall with photo gates setup near it? or is there an invisible wall that you can't past... Marked by where the photo gates are.

If you read the rules it is all there. 2 Photogates (if they have them) one at .2m and one at 8.2m. The wall is in between the set distances and your objective is to touch the wall and not destroy the egg
