I agree with the concerns about NWF having different classifications, but I competed using NWF and it actually worked fine. I like it because it has slightly more info about each insect than Audubon. My partner and I barely used the book for identification though, so if you're planning on using the book a lot to identify insects, it could be different.

In response to the other question:
I just tabbed each order in the book, not all the families. On the notesheet, just put whatever you think could possibly be helpful. Diagrams, terms, specific info about each family, etc. There are a bunch of topics listed on the rules that we can be tested on for each insect so it would be good to make sure you can answer questions about those things. You can cram a ton of info on a double sided sheet if you use a tiny font, small margins, and less than single spacing haha.

Yes, it is certainly important to know all of the relevant information for each insect. Keep in mind that each insect must be correctly identified first, or the information will not apply. Also I am assuming it is station based so you might have a point about not relying heavily on your field guide. I competed in forestry last year and found it to be crucial to be able to have some general idea of what your specimen is before you even touch the field guide.

I am making a test for this, since we are in need of one. Do you guys think that six multipart identification questions and a dichotomus key will be enough? I was thinking more ten questions, but after making six and a dichotomus key I think I might not need that many

1. I looked up corixidae and notonectidae but different sites called them a water boatman, a backswimmer, and vice versa. Any clarification?

2. Same problem I guess. Drosophilidae and Tetriphidae...? Is Tetriphidae under Drosophilidae? Please clarify because I'm confused. Thank you! I probably have this all wrong so I can really use the help!

Just go by the list and what Audubon says.
The common names for Notonectidae and Corixidae differ from region to region. For example, I've read that in the UK, backswimmers are often called water boatmen. I don't believe Tetriphidae is under Drosophilidae, although they are both "fruit flies". The list, Audubon guide, and other field guides I've used all call Drosophilidae "pomace flies", but they are commonly known as fruit flies. Drosophila melanogaster is widely known as a fruit fly although it is really a pomace fly.
It's like how Lampyridae are called fireflies and lightning bugs, although they are beetles. Follow the list and Audubon, and you'll be alright.

@henceagrin36, thank you! Well during the one invite i've been to, they only asked for scientific name. I also noticed sometimes Google images categorizes certain pictures under the wrong name. That's what spurred my questions. Thanks so much!

Hello.

If anyone has already taken an Entomology test at an invitational or other tournament, could you please tell me how the test was? I've searched everywhere for Entomology tests but I haven't had any luck.
