yes it's a whirligig beetle larvae. also their cocoon is made out of mud. So i guess gigaboo can go next

Blackfly, they transmit diseases like river blindness to humans. Is there any good way to tell these apart from horseflys?

Yes, good job. I think blackflies have different eyes and more bee or wasp-like bodies.

How specific should we study about what the macroinvertebrates indicate about the water quality? Just the classes? Or the oxygen level too?

water scorpion, class 1, eats small invertebrates, sometimes fish, breathes via siphons
