Re: Forestry B/C
Hey guys, sorry for interrupting this conversation, and sorry if this sounds stupid, but it's my first time doing an ID event, but on the rules, it says that the team can bring "one copy of the Official National Tree List (teams may tab {limit 3 words} the guides and write on any of these)." How does the tabbing work? And what does it mean by limit 3 words? Yeah, basically it'd be great if someone could just explain the tabbing of the field guides to me, so I won't get DQ'ed.

Just get little Post-it flag things or tear up Post-it notes or use masking tape and stick them in your binder for whatever - note where your specimens are, etc. The little flag bits should poke out to make things easier for you, and you can color-code them (if you get the multicolored flag things) to your heart's content. You can write a maximum of 3 words on each tab (for example, you could probably write each specimen name on a tab). The Eviscerator wrote:Hey guys, sorry if this sounds stupid, but it's my first time doing an ID event, but on the rules, it says that the team can bring "one copy of the Official National Tree List (teams may tab {limit 3 words} the guides and write on any of these)." And by 'flag things', I mean something like

Re: Forestry B/C
It means that you can use Post-It! tabs like these

or cut up post-its or whatever sticking out of the page with the name of the tree that's on the page showing. The limit on the tab means that you can only write 3 words on the tab, which is enough.
EDIT: Beaten. xD

Also on the tabbing, the three words rule doesn't apply to actually writing in the book...right??
Also, I don't think we're allowed to put printed material in the field guides b/c last year, my ornithology teammate was disqualified for having a diagram of some feathers taped to her field guide...

You can write as much as you want directly into the book, but taping a page in - if not outright banned in the rules - is definitely against the spirit of the field guide. Don't do it; better safe than sorry.TheBookworm wrote:Also on the tabbing, the three words rule doesn't apply to actually writing in the book...right??Also, I don't think we're allowed to put printed material in the field guides b/c last year, my ornithology teammate was disqualified for having a diagram of some feathers taped to her field guide...

Re: Forestry B/C
Arrrrrrg!
This is soooo confusing! The field guides are all either better for identification or information. Hmm. Sibley seems to be better for identification, and has a lot of writing space, but lacks the amount of information I'd like. I heard NWF has a lot of information. Is this true?

Yep, the NWF is filled with both ID and general info, while the Sibley concentrates on just ID and has more pictures.
I wouldn't worry about finding the best field guide for competing yet. Just try and get your hands on as many different guides as possible and work with them to learn all the trees. The guide you'll bring to the competition might be completely different from the one you use most often to study.

ornithology, forestry, entomology, triple E, green generation, water quality, dynamic planet (lakes & rivers), awesome aquifers, meteorology, robot arm, write it do it. :)

Re: Forestry B/C
Thanks guys!! And as for the sibley guide mainly for ID...don't forget we can take two. So maybe you can take one that's really good at ID and another that has really good info about the individual species. And any other extra info about the species that isn't in either one of the field guides you could just write it in there...and you even said sibley had a lot of space so...
