If the answer to all three of these questions is yes, then you didn't answer the first one right. If the answer to the last two questions are yes, then you should remind them that you should never take nats for granted. You can pay dearly for that.
The answers to the last two are no and yes.

Oh, I see. You must have a team that has improved and as such feels it will get to nationals? I sort of had the same problem last year. You need to show them that nationals is never taken for granted, but unless you've had an experience like my own, that's tough to do.

My team has realized that since we live in OH, we're probably not going to win much, and this stops them from trying. That's no excuse (at least TRY!!!).

Ouch... yeah, i know what your talking about. we were undefeated last year, and all the newbies think that just bc we made 8th at nats last year, they don't have to practice and everything will come to them... its REALLY annoying, downing, and frankly... pathetic. I feel your pain. My advice? -not that you asked but, Say what you can, but you can only say so much (you know like you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink) YOU set the example, i know its a team effort but maybe it takes someone who is willing to take the fist step and give it everything. (whoa. that sounds REALLY cheesy). maybe you could talk to your coach? for us, we keep tabs on practice hours, grades, and how many metals and competitions, and that decides who goes to state. Motivation. the ohio part is a slight downfall, but you can definitely over come that, even if its just placing 2nd or 3rd at state, its still better than the people behind you. :) good luck!!!

No matter what the experiment's result, there will always be someone eager to:(a) misinterpret it(b) fake it, or (c) believe it supports his own pet theory.

I am almost positive we (Cheyenne Central from Wyoming) will make it to nationals. Our whole state only has like five teams, and we are the best.

Last year, my B division team made it, not so sure about my C division team this year...

Quizbowl:
STOP COMPLAINING!

Our team came in 4th when I was a 6th grader. The very next year, we worked our asses off and made it to nationals, against a very strong field. The next year, we didn't make it, coming in 3rd. Last year, we came in second in regionals, losing for the first time in years. We studied and worked harder than we ever had, and won the state for the first time. You can't expect other people to lose for you, you just have to work that much harder.

In addition, another team who usually finished in the bottom half of the top ten stepped it up last year and this year, working incredibly hard, and finished in 4th two years ago, and 2nd last year.

A bit excessive with the exclamation marks, are we? Of course, it might be that I'm reading this as you yelling and it's 7 in the morning....
