Pleiades wrote:Right now i'm reading over my writer's directions to make sure she's not doing anything illegal and i have a few questions. I know they may vary depending upon the event supervisor. There's a k'nex piece that looks exactly like an L so would it be legal to describe the piece saying: "4 purple looks like "L". The only reason i'm questioning this one is because even though it's a letter, it may seem like a picture. Still with k'nex, can you say "green piece coming out of 4 [hole]" or would that be a code and therefore illegal? If she said "attach a L-purple" L would already have to have been defined, right?
I know that nothing's official unless it's on soinc.org but what do you think about these?
for the "L" stuff i think that should be allowed, because your allowed to write "4 purple that looks like watermelon" for the other stuff i don't know because i'm not doing this event

The "L" should deffinately be allowed since you can use any symbol on a standard keyboard. As far as the code, that depends on the event supervidor and what they think "code" means.

If she said "attach a L-purple" L would already have to have been defined, right?
The rules state:
Only words and numerals may be used.
The letter "L" is not a word, it is an abbreviation.
There rules have this to say about abbreviations:
All abbreviations (not symbols) must be defined either at the beginning or when the abbreviation is first used.
.My opinion: Since you use "L-Purple" as a term, you should specifically define what "L-Purple" means. e.g.,
L-purple designates the purple objects in the shape of an "L".

yeah if you even once consider it might be illegal during competition, just define it, no points marked down for defining something you dont have to.

However, describing a structure as in an l or x or t shape is legal. Or at least I've done it at nats and medaled so I assume I wasn't penalized...
But yeah, L-purple has to be defined.

"It is the same event every year. The only rule change since 2003 was really just a clarification. The use of symbols has always been prohibited, but you are now allowed to use symbols that appear anywhere on a standard keyboard"
you can also use other symbols, so long as, before you write the instructions for the the object, you have to define them. and then you're good!

So draw a picture of the entire structure, but then at the beginning write: I am defining the following symbol as the description of the entire structure.

Para. 2.b., sentence 3:
"Symbols, drawings and diagrams are not allowed, with the exception of common punctuation and editing symbols."
Para. 2.b., sentence 7:
"All abbreviations (not symbols) must be defined either at the beginning or when the abbreviation is first used."
