Agreed. Pentathalon didnt even count towards the team's overall score in my states because it was so hard to...eh...whats the word...grade? no that's tests...judge! yeah it was so hard to judge.

Pentathlon is stupid in my opinion because it judges partly on athletic ability. (This is a biased opinion from someone who has no said ability, but honestly... ;) )

oh my god. this is the greatest thread ever created!! i hate pentathlon, and would love to implement this, but unfortunately pentathlon was not regional in my area, and our states is coming up next week, so it would be too tight to coordinate. but im on state pentathlon. so i really hope it is discontinued after this year!! please, science olympiad, i am begging you, remove pentathlon! it is a pointless event judging who has more random science knowledge, and the most athletic nerds on its team!! UGH!

You are right. Science olypiad is for using brains. Not athleticism. It wont get you very far in the world unless you become a proffesional. and what about the rest of us who have NO coordination or aim?

what exactly did people in this event have to do anyway? A think I agree if I got what everyone is saying about it this is Science Olympiad and their should no events that rely on any athletic ability's (even though I play 3 sports at my high school). I do think it is kind of dumb that they would judge people on their physical ability because if a team was smart they would just put their best athletes on there and win over teams that are just made up of brainy kids but we are in SCEINCE Olympiad not a sport.
I do have a question what were some of the physical challenges that people have had to do?

I am the first to admit, I HAVE NO COORDINATION!!!! Ask anyone on my team... it's very humorous actully... I'm not allowed withen a ten ft radius of our building events for fear I might break them(A bit of an exaturation...)

But anyway, even though I am strongly opposed to the event, I think it would be very funny if I were put into Pentathalon just to see how I did... not that that would ever happen but still...

a bunch of people on my team have like 0 coordination. two of those people are my best friends. but my other best friend and i were put on the pentathlon team with them, and its awesome. Friend 1 falls over no matter where she is or what she's doing. seriously, just the other day, all four of us were just walking around and all of a sudden, she falls over right in front of us, and we all fall down on top of her. Friend 2 can't aim anything but a basketball. anything bigger, and she drops it. anything smaller and she puts too much power behind it, and misses completely. Friend 3 is pretty coordinated, but she doesn't do very many sports. she does track, and that's it. plus she tends to get.....um....excited. as for me, i play more sports than all of them, and im more coordinated, but im pretty much the same as friend 3. my point is, you only have to endure about 2 minutes of the physical challenge before you get to go on to your precious academic challenge. it's really not that big of a deal. the main point is to test your problem solving, some athletic ability (but they know they're dealing with a bunch of kids who aren't that into sports), and how well you work together. it's one event. while i realize the significance of an event to the overall score of a team, as long as you do well in the academic part, it shouldn't be that bad.

All of the arguments keep on being brought up. It's just a constant circle. Just because an event is "fun" doesn't make it good. What makes an event good is that it follows the spirit of SO. And Pentathlon doesn't do that by trying to incorporate athleticism.
