I submitted a clarification regarding the first part of your question awhile ago. However, I see no problem with having other materials inside the pint.ryang353 wrote:Do the one pint pint containers have to be unmodified? Also can other items to assist in sorting, such as magnets, be inside the pint containers?

Re: Mission Possible C
this FAQ says that only 2 of the 3 types of items are allowed in the mixture of the start task. ( http://www.soinc.org/node/1225 ) does this mean during the bonus task you can qualify with 2 containers with their respective objects and another one simply empty to qualify for it? Or if you only had 2 type of items you cannot qualify for the bonus at all?

Re: Mission Possible C
The FAQ doesn't make sense... It say a mixture is 2 or more, then limits a mixture to 2. :O

Re: Mission Possible C
I think they just used some misleading wording in the second part of it, and they really meant that just using 2 of the 3 items is permitted. So the "may" doesn't imply you can't use more than 2. I could be wrong, but the alternative just doesn't make sense to meiwonder wrote:The FAQ doesn't make sense... It say a mixture is 2 or more, then limits a mixture to 2. :O
If you're only using two types, yeah I think you'd just leave the third (labeled) container empty. You'd get a maximum 20x5=100 bonus points instead of 150.Kazen wrote:this FAQ says that only 2 of the 3 types of items are allowed in the mixture of the start task. On another note, do any of you think it makes no sense that LED's are allowed, but resistors in general aren't? Basically all applications of LED's require a resistor in series to limit the current. It also doesn't make sense because if we can't use conventional resistors, we could just wire a network of photoresistors, which are allowed, in series with LEDs. I submitted a question about it but am curious as to what you guys think.

First off, I agree with your interpretation of the FAQ, but then I run the risk of the judge not agreeing (I've seen strange things) and having issues because of that.
As far as the electronic components, I think what they decided to allow is really strange this year... and yeah, I can't find a good use for leds..

"A mixture is an aggregate of 2 or more different substances therefore teams may use only 2 of the 3 items in their mixture."
A mixture is 2 or MORE. Teams MAY use 2 of the 3 items in their mixture. They are not limited to just two.

That's the confusing part. If someone says, you may only take one of something, the vast majority of people take that as, you are not allowed to take more than one. So the way it reads, we may only use 2 of the 3 items. Which, seems to be what they're saying, however it makes no sense.

Re: Mission Possible C
This is quite ambiguously worded ![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_e_sad.gif)
And I agree about the resistors, I was hoping it was just an error

Re: Mission Possible C
I don't think it is ambiguous. "May use only two" is not at all the same thing as "may only use two." Put it in the context of the question, which was about the minimum number, and the meaning is perfectly clear - this is a floor, not a ceiling.

Re: Mission Possible C
How are may use only two and may only use two different? They have the same meaning for me...
And yes, in the context of the question it doesn't make sense, but the response seems to go outside of what the question was asking.
But whatever, I doubt any ES is going to have a problem with bringing 3 items in the mixture.
