I did Forestry last year as well, and I do agree; the studying did help.

However, it says on the reference you gave me that the event will likely be stationed. If that is so, then it won't be timed. We'll have the whole hour to flip through our tabbed binder to get all the answers. I mean, I'm going to study hard. Flash cards galore. That's what helped me get 1st in Forestry and Water Quality last year in our regional competitions. But I don't see the motivation if this is what you can bring in.

Also, if you don't mind my asking, what school district are you from?

I believe on the Forestry rules it also said that the event would be run at stations (rule 3b)?

But...yeah, I honestly don't know why for some events you can bring in a binder. I mean, for Optics we could bring in a binder, but that only helped with the formulas. But then I don't get why we could bring in a binder by Food Science...I guess sometimes it's just better to just go with the flow :/ In the unlikely event that I end up doing Triple E, I guess it would make more sense...

I'm from Great Neck South Middle, which is in the Western Long Island region.

O_O Wat. Last year they gave us PowerPoints of specimens, kept them for thirty seconds, then we had to find them in a "commercially published field guide" until they went to the next slide, which asked a question about the specimen (which is on the factual section of the Audubon Guide).

There should at least be practice tests for it, because I don't know what to expect! That's why I'm studying everything. Better safe than sorry!

You're from Long Island! Oh, gosh. I mean, kind of off-topic, but didn't Long Island get hit badly by the hurricane?

I hope that there are practise tests for this trial event later in the year too. Our team is thinking of attending an invitational, so I guess we could get a test there.

Haha, a lot (read: nearly all) of my friends and SciOly teammates lost power due to the hurricane, but I didn't XD. i don't think we got hit as badly as NYC; my friends who go to school there don't have school for a week. We had school cancelled today, yesterday, and tomorrow, but I do believe everything's fine here.

We don't have invitationals, or at least, we haven't been invited to any. :P Our school district has one team and one team only, and we're far too poor to host something like that.

Same for me. :P Yonkers pretty much dodged the storm! Same as you, we haven't had school all week.

We have two teams that in the past have been equally stacked, but now I believe we're going to start stacking them and create a Team A and Team B. We've actually never been to an invitational before, but some team members brought up the idea and our teacher approves of it, so we'll see where that goes from there. I don't think you have to be invited to an invitational..or do you? :?: I always thought that if you don't get invited, you can contact the invitational director and they will host you if they have space and you pay money, of course.

Yeah, I just looked into it. Which invitational would you go to, if you are? I couldn't find any local ones...
And do you have to go with a team, or can you do it with another person, just for your events? I want to attend it with my brother to touch up on Triple E and his event, Heredity.

We were thinking of going to the Red Creek Invitational in NY and/or the Rustin Invitational in PA. They're not very local (each one is about 3 hours away), but the trip is realistically possible, and I think it's worth driving three hours to get to compete against the best teams in NY/PA.
I think you have to go with a team, though--maybe try fundraising and telling your school of the idea of an invitational?

xD I doubt my team would be willing to do that. I thought there would be one in the Tri-State area or something.

You can also go to the Comet Invitational in PA. It's a couple hours closer to NY than Rustin, and I'm fairly sure Gelinas went last year too. It's not quite as competitive, but you don't have to travel as far.
