I see, thanks. How are you guys differentiating the cypresses? I'm getting really confused about it. I can only differentiate them if I have a really, really close view with all the scales and things. But the Utah Juniper and the Rocky Mountain Juniper and the Eastern Redcedar look almost identically, especially the first two.

The main difference beteen the Rocky Mountain Juniper and the Utah Juniper is that the Rocky Mountains have buish or blue-blackish seed cones, while the Utah has tanish seed cones. Also, the Rocky Mountain Juniper grows taller and is found more commonly. Otherwise, they do look pretty much the same, and I'm not really sure about the Eastern Red Cedar.

Also, I went to the library and took out a lot of field guides. I think I'm going to get Sibley because it seems to be the most comprehensive. Does anyone have a suggestion on other good field guides besides Smithsonian, NWF, Audobon, and Sibley?

Hm, I saw the amazon previews of a forestry book by Golden Guides. The pictures are drawn but in my opinion, look a lot more neat than Sibleys...then again, I haven't really started prepping for science o, so...I havent got a copy yet to peruse, but when I do, I'll be sure to post my opinions.

I looked at it on Amazon and the preview seemed only to be of pages other than the actual profile pages. I think you would get a better opinion if you've seen the actual profile pages for specific trees.

Try clicking "Surprise Me" when the preview window opens.

Can you post the link? The two books that I've seen do not have a "surprise me!" option (if I am looking at the right place).

In the first link that you posted, click "Search inside this book" under the image, then "Surprise Me" in the left column under book sections.

I purchased the American Nature Guide to Trees this summer, but after perusing it it seems more like a reference than an actual guide. The entries per tree are not very comprehensive, though it does have some good overall information.
