BECAUSE the porcupine's quills are its best method of defending itself from predators. The sharp quills, which are modified hairs, are all over the porcupine's body, including its tail. When the North American porcupine, the most common species in the Americas, is threatened, it turns its tail toward the approaching animal. If attacked, this porcupine will thrash its predator with its tail, thrusting its quills into the other animal's hide. Often some of the quills will come off the porcupine's tail, and their barbed ends (like a fishhook) will stay embedded in the attacker's skin. The average porcupine has around 30,000 quills.
