Dang, not even putting Melville in 20th? I mean they aren't as strong as last year, but it still looks like they're going to win 1st at states
I disagree somewhat; I think Columbia has to be the favorite right now. I definitely think Ward's hovering around the 20th mark for nationals predictions; I wouldn't blame anyone for including them or leaving them out.

They also still need to make it out of NY State

Im pretty sure they're going to at least make nationals; we aren't too worried about that...
The concern is more how well WM is going to do past that point

Considering that F-M is still doing pretty well (and has historically gotten better throughout the season), and GNS is also doing well, it's definitely not a given.

Maybe I'm going crazy, but I don't see Ward Melville on the Princeton results sheet.

Oh yeah that's right:

Yeah the observation that they performed poorly on the study events is about right. Fayetteville-Manlius seemed impressive, but I was most surprised by Mason.

Uh, as vague as it may sound, I'm guessing that they just collectively didn't do well enough. That's how it was for my team, at least.
Nothing in particular needs to "happen" for a historically strong team to miss nationals. Just gotta be less strong in a particular year than two other teams in your state (or three...).
