Re: General Mission Possible
To make a pulley with IMA>1, must you use a block and tackle pulley?
Just having unequal weights wouldn't make it an IMA greater than 1 right?
I"m questioning for my sister.

Correct. Check out the wikipedia page that explains this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulley

Re: General Mission Possible
Would a rack and pinion gear system on top of a ramp be considered one or two tasks? Also, would it be allowed?

What would be considered a good score in this event?

What two tasks are you planning on using them for and what suggests you to think it will not be allowed?foreverphysics wrote:Would a rack and pinion gear system on top of a ramp be considered one or two tasks? Also, would it be allowed?

Re: General Mission Possible
I'm considering using the system to pull weights up the ramp. Not allowed-->technically not pulling, or parallel task?chalker7 wrote:What two tasks are you planning on using them for and what suggests you to think it will not be allowed?foreverphysics wrote:Would a rack and pinion gear system on top of a ramp be considered one or two tasks? Re: General Mission Possible
Ah, well don't consider this an official clarification, for that you have to go to soinc.org and submit a question. However, if I were judging (and I probably won't be for this event), I would say that method involves pushing the weight up a ramp, not pulling it. Look on earlier threads for the parallel tasks question (we've discussed it at length, possibly in previous years), but basically if the rack and pinion failed, the weight would slide down the ramp and the tasks would not complete, so they are not parallel tasks.foreverphysics wrote: I'm considering using the system to pull weights up the ramp.
