Charcoal is only hazardous if you are breathing in large amounts. I am using charcoal as a way of remediation as well, and my coach has told me it is not considered hazardous. Hope this helps ;)
Thanks. Yeah, I talked to someone who knew about that stuff and she also said it was really only hazardous if you touch it and handle it a lot. I ended up using it, and got 1st! It is a really good way to show remediation! :)

A tip using charcoal, though, is to put the "contaminated" water in it at the beginning of the presentation to have good effects that will show later on.
Road Scholar seems to depress everyone on my team who does it, but it's my favorite event...

I would also recommend using Nesquick or ovaltine cause that clears up really quickly!

Is there such a thing as a water table well? I got it wrong on a test. If so, what does it do?

Check out the diagram http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/earthgwwells.html... A water table well is in the unconfined zone.

That was the diagram on the test. I know that it states "Water Table Well" but I have never heard of it before so I was a little confused.

Also, when did you start doing Aquifers? ;)

Water table well = a well that taps water from an unconfined aquifer. basically, not an artesian well.

Wow, you know what events I do :? In DP we need to have a basic understanding of aquifers..

I put a small container underneath a separate well. i contaminated this water, then used a thick cotton weave to remove the coloring

Oh, this is pretty easy. I mean, I've never gone to nationals, but I've done regionals two years and both times i had to show remediation. Basically, show contamination by making a sewer pipe (cut up a water bottle, poke a hole in the side and hot glue a straw to it, when you pour your contaminant in, it should leak out). Anyway, I like to use Ovaltine or nesquick as a contaminant because its very easy to remediate. Just make a remediation plant before the actual comp (a see through container with a cut up plastic bottle taped to the top. Just put a coffee filter in the water bottle and charcoal in that.) Use a syringe to suck up some contaminated water, put that in a vial separately. Suck up some more contaminated water, put it through your filter (explaining the process) and then take out the now clean water with another syringe and put this in a separate vial. After some practice, the water should clear up in no time. Hope this helped!
