The [wiki][/wiki] has some good information, but basically, bearing is (Direction)(Degrees)(Direction) and Azimuth is (Degrees). Be sure you have your protractor! If you are looking for a bearing that is due Northeast, the bearing is N 45 E. The azimuth would also be 45 degrees. However, if you want a bearing that is due Southwest, the bearing is S 45 W and the azimuth is 225. Here's how you do bearing: You take the first direction, North or South, and the second direction, East or West, and determine the angle from 0-90 with 0 being due North or South and 90 being due East or West. Azimuth is easier. Position your protractor so 0 is due North, and find the total degrees. N = 0, E = 90, S = 180, and W = 270. Just figure out the total degrees (0-359) and you're good to go. Hope that makes sense.

In the state, do they have both the "mapping directions exam" and the "creating the topographic maps exam"? At our regionals, there was only the mapping exam.

What do you mean? In every single event I've had a topographic section and a highway map section, as well as a build-a-map section. In all but the first invitational I've had profiling, if that helps any. Also, UTM for states as well.

For my regional competition at Galveston, we only had the mapping part of the exam. We did not have to build a topographic map using map symbols and the USGS topo symbols. (http://topomaps.usgs.gov/) I was a little confused, but I just wanted to know if that was still available.

By the way, zyzzyva98, (I know this is off topic), but how do you make your signature like that-displaying all of the events and awards you have won?

Yes, you will want to make sure you know everything within the rules. It also helps to have a symbols sheet, which we conveniently forgot at regionals.

To get my signature, I just went through the link on someone else's signature that looked similar (there are a lot out there, just click on one of the bars) and fiddled around a bit on the website. It's http://www.userbars.com/

I think a key to being successful in this event is probably practicing locating different points and features on a map

Definitely, you need to be good at "I Spy" to be good at this event.
