Our team was tiered this past Saturday because the judge said we played a perfect octave on Hornpipe. We are confused. The rules say in 4c, Part 2i, "The team must then perform, in any key within the musical ranges specified, the lines of music included below. The piece must be played as a duet including melody and harmony. Competitors must supply their own harmony." But how can we perform the lines of music below if we change some of the notes to create harmony?

Is it ok for us to do either of the following:

1. Have the harmonizing instrument use a different rhythm to harmonize?

2. Use different notes than the music provided in the rules for one of the instruments?

Thanks.

Right, you need to change some of the notes and/or rhythms for one of the instruments. Typically only one instrument plays the original written part in the rules.

Remembering back to my freshman theory class, it's bad form to use parallel fifths or parallel octaves in harmonizing music. When my daughter and her friend did SOM in C Div in 2011 and 2012, they arranged the music so that both instruments got to carry the melody at different times.

Hi, I was wondering if you're allowed to buy a stand for pvc pipes. I know the rules say that you're not allowed to use professionally made parts but we won't use the stand to play it. Is this allowed? Because we're really running out of time and our attempt at building a stand didn't work out

Are there even stands for PVC pipes easily to get? You probably could get by with it, though I made my own stand when I did SOM. Not super sure though...

I was thinking of buying a wooden table or something and drill holes for the pipes to fit through. Then I would use couplings to hold them in place.

I used two (two are used so it doesn't wobble), thin wooden slabs and cut holes for the PVC pipe (much like what you're doing for the wooden table), spaced the slabs apart using small blocks of wood (or small plastic pieces, it doesn't really matter), and then made legs for the bottom. Voila, you have a stand.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I think I might give the stand one more try.
