I know when not to use dusting, but for cyanoacrylate it can be used for lots of things...same with ninhydrin and iodine fuming. I looked up the special types of surfaces but those three can be used for nearly all surfaces.
Ninhydrin is specifically good for paper ... Cyanoacrylate is good for nonporous surfaces ... that's all I usually need to remember during competition. Everything else I usually answer with dusting because iodine fuming is not used very often nowadays.

Thanks so much! It'll be my first time ever at a state competition in 2 weeks. I'm really excited. Good luck everyone!

It's basically just like identifying other types of hair ... but bat hair is obviously different from the other types of hair.

How would one go about obtaining bat hair? That's our biggest question as of right now.

Oh. I really don't know that one. Depends on the situation, I guess. Maybe something related to a crime in a cave ... lol ...

There is a webiste linked to on soinc.org: http://sciencekit.com/science-olympiad- ... IG0054843/
It sells the chemical kits with all types of hair (including 1 bat hair), but it's rather pricy.

Instead of going about getting expensive kits you could just search pictures on google. They're really hard to find, but all of the different hairs and fibers should have certain distinguishing characteristics that make them identifiable.

By the way, how much of the tests are usually theory? I tried a practice test and they asked all these vocabulary questions about different types of evidence and the investigation process...

None of the high-level tests should be about theory at all, maybe a question or two (but still less than 5% of the total points.)
