I personally just made a quizlet with the common name and an image for the def. - After just learning those for a few minutes everyday, I’ve mastered the identification. So that’s what I’d recommend doing! Making your own would be best but if you’re in a rush I have one you can use :,) - https://quizlet.com/422569432/ornitholo ... mf8&x=1jqY

I would suggest memorization, as in a test you definitely do not want to let identification be a hurdle to you and waste any time on that. Some techniques you could try would be flashcards, etc. However, if you have extra space in your binder, it certainly would not hurt to have a flowchart in case a tricky specimen comes up.

I'm memorizing all the birds because you only get a certain amount of time per bird (if it's run as stations) so you want to spend as much of your time as possible reading through what you wrote down to answer the questions after the identification.

Thanks for all of the feedback on my question! As a follow-up, for those who have taken tests, will I be seeing much identification of juveniles or females of species? Just wanting to know if I have to memorize any major differences within a species.

Depends on level of tournament. At a smaller invite, it's unlikely, while at a larger invite, it would be expected. I am and would suggest learning females and juveniles though because you never know what could come up. If you want to know the rough level of your regionals or invite's test, maybe look through archives of their older tests, their Herpetology tests might help you gain a bit of insight into the level of difficulty.

How do y'all memorize the calls? I like to watch the bird itself make the call, but I'm not sure if there is a better way to do it that I have yet to discover. Also what sites/resources do you use to listen to the calls?
I also go by Chino.

To memorize the birds, I like to look at the birds while listening to them because it forms like a visual connection between the sounds and the bird. I also find it helpful to kinda discern what the bird is calling(saying) so like I like to think of the American Bittern's call as a rapid high pitched flickering of sound between two pitches in rapid succession which kinda helps me. I guess find what works best for you.

I use Macaulay Library is good in that it has a TON of high quality recordings to choose from.
