Interesting, I've never heard anyone from NY call it pop. It's certainly soda on Long Island.

I'm not sure if anyone's said this here before, but you know you've been on Long Island too long when you think of anything north/west of Manhattan as "upstate".
Anywhere from say Syracuse west it's definitely pop. If you say "soda" here in Buffalo everyone knows you're an outsider.

NYC might as well be a separate entity from the rest of the state.
NYC and Long Island. No one on Long Island says pop.
Wait, you said that already. Whatever, too late, i dont feel like not posting this.
And yes, anything connected to the continent is "upstate". Manhattan and Long Island= not upstate.

That's the NYC version of "upstate." A lot of the rest of the state uses "upstate" to refer to Watertown and north (Adirondacks, etc). We prefer to refer to the state by the region - Western New York, Central New York, Capital Region, Southern Tier, etc.

If you walk through Buffalo and say you're in "Upstate New York" people are going to give you weird looks.

Seems to be indicated by this map as well.

http://strangemaps.wordpress.com/2008/0 ... -soda-map/
the county Syracuse is in(onodaga county) is in the 80-100% "soda" catagory
No one says pop absolutely no one unless your not from around here
But look how abrupt the changeover is - goes from strong "soda" to strong "pop" territory. So "around here" is relative - someone from Rochester is only a little over an hour away, but they'll most likely say "pop."

It's definitely soda around here. You don't hear anyone really say "pop". Once in a while someone will say "soda pop" but that's not frequent.

or they stood in restaurants and gas stations or street corners all across the US listening to what people asked for when they wanted a carbonated beverage (pop)
