Interlake Virtual Build Video Exchange - open to all teams, no travel required

For anything Science Olympiad-related that might not fall under a specific event or competition.

From my reading of the policies, we can't call this an official Science Olympiad Tournament, but quoting https://www.soinc.org/invitationals, "Teams may write their own original materials and share them with others as practice, not as a Science Olympiad Tournament." We cannot charge a fee (which we used to have for shipping costs and fundraising, but have now removed), but according to this policy, it seems to me that we can still videotape our own devices and share our designs and scores with other people. Our team just wants to provide an easy way for teams to share build designs and scores with other teams.

You can register up to the end of the submission deadline, assuming that we're still allowed to do this?
From what chalker says above, it seems to me you are set, and you've changed what you needed. I'm interested, and I think this mini "competition" if you will, will be useful.

From the looks of it, Milton (GA) will participate.

This topic might be better suited to the Build Events forum? Since it's technically not a competition anymore

Bearden was called a "science challenge" with no formal affiliation with SO. It was just a group of coaches sharing tests and scores and there was no fee involved. All teams scored their own tests. and Samlan16, you may not have noticed, but I never sent out rankings or awarded certificates for Bearden. Those test scores (at least for FSA) were for internal use only. It in no way to really rank things as each team ran things differently.

Does that mean Illinois 2014 isn't a real tournament!? (Illinois 2014 Wiki for those who don't get it)

Of course it's a real tournament! Chalker just does not want outsiders to know.

watermydoing14 wrote:I would like to invite you to the 1st annual Interlake Virtual Build Smackdown! The purpose of this competition is to compare scores and build designs with teams from across the country. Teams are allowed to submit either only their scores for their builds, or they can submit both scores and videos of their builds. If teams submit videos, they will receive access to all the other videos that are submitted by other teams. It's a great opportunity to get new design ideas, see where you stand among other schools, and to provide your team an incentive to get their builds done before their next competition!

The submission period for materials is February 7-13 (how's that for lucky numbers!), so get ready to film and score your builds before the end of that period.

Also, just curious, how is Science Olympiad to know if a team is holding an online or virtual tournament? I'm guessing it's just an honesty policy kind of thing.
Agreed. There were no repercussions for Bearden's invite, so why now?
Or the Iolani tournament as well. They have run if for many years now.
Just curious, do you have any information about the Bearden Science Challenge or the Iolani tournament? Were they both held online? I can't find anything with a Google search :(

So far, one team is signed up.
At this point however, it's unlikely that Interlake will be able to actually participate in this exchange - the officers don't want to risk breaking any rules and our teams don't have enough builds finished to videotape them anyway. I suppose I would be willing to facilitate the exchange of videos, but not scores because using official Science Olympiad rules is the main issue with the smackdown right now

I know Iolani has run for several years now (there was a thread in the 2013 Archives about it) and Bearden started theirs this year. Both of them have had many prominent schools participating.
