ACh is a neurotransmitter in motor neurons that activates skeletal muscle. It is released by motor neurons and detected by receptors on the skeletal muscle. In myasthenia gravis, the body produces antibodies against ACh receptors so that the signal can't transmit between the motor neuron and the skeletal muscle. This results in muscle weakness and fatigue, and eventually the motor end plate is destroyed. This can be treated with drugs that inhibit the enzyme that breaks down ACh.

What is poliomyelitis and how is it treated? What is its effect on the muscular system?

Poliomyelitis (more commonly called polio) is an infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. In about 0.5% of cases there is weakness of muscles, which results in an inability to move. There is no cure. However, rehab can be found for patients affected by polio.

Hide works by putting text inside the tags; separate the text shown and text hidden with a pipe (usually Shift+backslash)

Going to go ahead and ask a question here!

Talking about the periosteum:

1. Describe two functions of the periosteum
2. The periosteum is composed of what type of tissue?
3. What are the two layers of the periosteum?
