For Reach for the Stars get the Audubon Guide for Stars. You should also get a text book related to stars (the different types) and their formation. Taking notes from the book while you are reading it will help.
Don't worry if it's your first time...the most important thing is to have fun! :D

One of the 5th graders has a legitimate chance of beating out 30 or so 8th graders for a spot on the 15 person main team. We'll see though.

there are some 5th graders on the middle school team in my area, and they beat the reigning state champion in an event at one of the invitationals...the coach might not let them compete at state though :(

That's really stupid. If the coach wants to do well at competition, then he should bring his best team.
