ikr? My sister and I were practically accused of cheating because of twin-telepathy at state last year. Honestly, if anything, it just makes communication before and after that much easier because we know we can be rude(r) to each other than to, say, a friend.

Practice also helps, but if that isn't clear after two years of doing it I don't know what is.
Wait, do you have an identical twin too? O.o

We had identical twins do Write It, Do It in 2011, and they did well! We had to warn the judges ahead of time, just in case they thought it was the same person...

We had two unrelated team members do Write It, Do It in 2012. Best duo ever in Write It, Do It for our team! So maybe the twin-telepathy thing is not really true... just a lot of practice!

Haha, a few years ago at our school I believe we had two best friends do the event together, and they didn't do very well at all. So now our coach's policy is that we have do do WIDI with someone we don't know...

We all have examples of close friends who A)did really, really well and B)tanked. The bottom line is that anyone CAN do well in this event if either they've adequately practiced or got really lucky. I happen to know a case of a 1st place medal from two friends who never practiced, but that doesn't happen every tournament.

Last year me and my partner, also my best friend, only practiced a little. Actually, the way we decided at our regional and state who would write was by rock, paper, scissors (I lost both times and got stuck writing). :) But, since then we discovered I'm a better writer and she's a better do-er.
What kinds of structures have you seen at competition? I've had legos before, and last year at state the structure was made out of multi coloured tongue depressors, washers and bolts, and some other random objects.

They made a catepillar out of foam balls, beads and pipe cleaners this past year at MN state. I've seen macaroni stuffed with string (still not sure exactly how I wrote that one)... How about on your end?

It seems there's a general pattern that at Regionals there are usually Legos and things that are meant to be built with, while at Nats it's a bunch of random stuff. States is sorta in the middle.

What didn't work? We practiced shortening explanations -- I guess you could call it "getting un-detailed" -- to save time... and it did save time... what didn't work?
Exothermic reactions? I studied them before they were cool.

You're right it does, but you have to be careful how far you take it. My partner and I have most likely pushed it as far as we can go without being DQ'd for writing in code.

Basically we didn't come out with results that we were able to get with longer words. It might have saved time, but I think the amount of detail we took to get into at Nationals got us the high placing, even though we didn't use all the materials. I remember side-glancing at another doer sitting beside me who had finished (at Nationals) using all the materials, however I remember looking up her school afterwards and seeing that they at least 8 places behind us.

Hi. I'm new to this event, and i'm just wondering: how do people do this event? Do people use codes or something to shorten down the time it takes to write?
Kind of from a small-town school and the seniors who were doing it just graduated. I read the forums and wiki, but it is still pretty confusing.
Can anyone help me?
