For anything Science Olympiad-related that might not fall under a specific event or competition.

Way to hate on me.

While you guys may do Science Olympiad just to put on your resumes, I personally do it for fun. I don't boast about my accomplishments. Due to the volatility of the competition (it's quite impossible to study everything in the rules and whatever random seemly related questions the test writer might think of) sometimes it's just dumb luck. I remember one time me and my partner just bs'ed the way through and surprisingly, we won a medal. We even beat the returning champions. I'm pretty sure they studied a lot harder, but somehow we were able to beat them. You never know who will win, and therefore conclude it's not too much of an accomplishment. I'm pretty sure some, if not most of you have gotten an unexpected win.

I'm actually not saying renaming the events is bad...its just...maybe you are taking a little too much emphasis on a relatively minor achievement. Go out and study for the SAT/ACT :P

Edit:
Disclaimers: While some luck is involved, studying will greatly improve your chances of doing well

I'm sorry if we offended you in any way, EFO.

Anyway, of course we do Science Olympiad for fun! Science Olympiad is the most meaningful and enjoyable activity I could imagine. The things I've learned, the people I've met, the experiences I've had... Science Olympiad gives you the full package.

Having said that, it doesn't hurt to be able to take advantage of the hard work you put into your events. Making the event names more serious-sounding wouldn't detract from the content of Science Olympiad; it would simply add another benefit to what is already the most awesome activity there is.

Earning a medal at nationals (Especially in C division) can help for scholarships in college.

Actually, I do recall that I've read somewhere that colleges emphasize depth of extracurricular involvement because they know a test score is just that - a measure of how well you did on one four-hour sitting. So I'd say that stellar Science Olympiad achievement might be able to make up for a poor test score. And... good to know I've been spending a majority of my free time for a 'relatively minor' achievement or two. :? I don't mean to be rude, honestly; don't be offended. I'm just saying that I really do enjoy Science Olympiad, but I'd like to be recognized for my accomplishments. Everyone would.

Completely and totally agreed. :D

Yeah, didn't they give full rides to gold medalists at Urbana-Champaign?

And on a different note, I support the more professional-sounding event names... I've been lucky so far with Fossils and Anatomy, but I would be wary of how colleges/etc. would see "State Medalist in Write It Do It" or something similar, because quite honestly that sounds a bit silly (despite the fact that it's actually impressive). And on an entirely different note, I still have the bad habit of calling Thermodynamics "Keep the Heat". I'm actually not sure whether I'll be able to shake that one, because I keep making that mistake and confusing the freshmen...

Quick fun story. At least 1 member of the Centerville High School team (which won overall 1st place), had already been accepted to UIUC and was going to start there only a few months later. Needless to say he (and his parents I hear) were ecstatic to suddenly find out instead of having to pay out of state tuition he was getting a full ride!

Just for the record New Mexico Tech automatically gives a scholarship for a state medal in Science Olympiad

Alabama does too:http://216.186.205.33/scienceolympiad/d ... frame.html
As a result, I have quite a few scholarships to there now...and it's a lot more than New Mexico Tech. Just saying.

EDIT: Apparently you also have to click on "Scholarships For Medal Winners" to see it after following the link.

Oh wow, those are some big scholarships, getting a state medal is an achievement but I don't know if it's really worth that much

I too am in support of the name change. I guess it's not as bad for building events (which are what I primarily participate in), except for Gravity Vehicle (eh, this one's not all that bad) and Sounds of Music. I guess naming them like this makes them more attractive and interesting, but it detracts from the value of the accomplishment when you are talking professionally. But I have to say, this year's events seem a little more serious imo.
