Wouldn't you be trying to get the lower score then? I take it M stands for the mass held?

m is mass of tower
w is weight held
h is height
how about the current system except add say .025 points for every mm over 50cm but up to 100cm (so the bonus stops counting after that)

This comes up every year. Over the next couple of months you may see a number of versions of the rules for next year. Its a general practice to try the new rules at a big summer clinic and then modify based on results. The draft rules from those clinics are often distributed and you don't want to know how many times I've had a team wave just such rules at me during a tournament. Coaches should KNOW better. Trust me, till the book comes out in Sept or so THEY ARE ALL DRAFTS SUBJECT TO CHANGE, sometimes BIG changes. If you work too hard trying to optimize to any draft rules you see you may be mislead when the final rules come out!
So, what to do. I'd break it down as follows for all the construction events.
If you can already build competitive towers (or whatever) to the '11 rules (say under 8 gm) RELAX. If you get the bug to build, try crazy new ideas. Explore different approaches. HAVE FUN.
If you have built towers, but are struggling to get to those amazing weights you see winning states and nationals, just use the '11 years rules and improve your skills at design, wood selection and assembly until you are in the competitive range for '11. Those skills will be applicable to whatever variations in the tower rules actually come out. Oh, and have FUN, it is summer after all.
If your towers aren't competitive at all, spend time reading the various tower threads and then incorporate that new knowledge into a building program to get better results. And again, HAVE FUN!

I agree. I think one of the most motivating parts of Scioly is HAVING FUN! If you don't have fun, you don't have much of a willingness to learn, therefor you might not do as well.

Search through some of the other topics in this forum, particularly the one about 2011-2012 events. Several people have posted lists.

They aren't releasing draft rules this year.

Apparently there was too much confusion for some people between the draft and real rules
