Re: What makes a good team?
My point isn't a necessity just like none of the others are. Any 2 of the things that have been mentioned would make a "good" team. Add more of these good team qualities and your team becomes better off.

Re: What makes a good team?
I agree that Having good coaches are really important for success, for the most part. Our C division team coaches base everything on seniority, when there is more potential and motivation from people lower on the seniority scale. That's how I see it for my team at least. They also want to give everyone a chance, which is good for clubs, but it doesn't work if you want the best team possible for competition.
Also in our B team, the coaches have changed throughout the years and now it seems they just keep getting a little worse each year... (Of course there are many other things that influenced this, but a good coach, especially in a B team can make a big difference)
Communication is also helpful, and I know a few people that don't seem to know what to study when there are so many resources available to them. I don't know what that would go under but knowing how to obtain information is important.
Some kind of leadership in the team is also helpful. Having someone motivate their team to work as hard as they are. If you see a teammate not doing anything, you'd probably have less motivation to do better yourself, especially if you're new and don't know what to expect.

Re: What makes a good team?
The whole competition itself hinges on parents/volunteers, coaches/volunteers, and the students. Most importantly here, the students (who actually take tests, etc to get the results) should be strong in their events, which means a lot of dedication and studying.
Being an uber-genius helps, but that's not an excuse for studying. Keep that in mind

Which means you need motivated officers. Who aren't busy.personasaurus rex wrote:That's how we run our team. Coaches do the behind the scenes work like getting us buses and stuff but the officer committee choose the team and schedules.quizbowl wrote:That's why we have the captains choose the teams. Yes, a little bias, but most captains have been here for 3-4 years, and they know how everyone is doing and what they are capable of.lllazar wrote:Quiz, look at it from my perspective. When you have a coach who refuses to go to invitationals when you've just described to her how beneficial it could be for the team, then you'd understand. Also, you need a coach who makes the team selection based on how good people are at the events.
Dedication counts, for most of it really. Test taking skills help. And after regionals, I'm convinced more than anything, that it can really be luck that makes or breaks a team.

An organized Coach, lots of people (they don't need to be motivated, the coach can do that) and a little cash never hurt

Re: What makes a good team?
I just think that you need kids on your team who work their butt off. Our team has a lot of smart kids, but there are also some people that aren't exceptionally smart, but just work very hard and place pretty well.
