Someone pointed out that I was dumb and thermostats with mercury switches do have bimetallic coils...so pics of that will be up as soon as my thermostat is back together...

Re: Temperature Task
Paradox took apart an outdoor dial thermometer and I took apart my oven thermometer, so we have some pics on the Bimetallic strip Wiki

Re: Temperature Task
Are peltiers even legal this year? There's a specific list of electric components we're allowed to use, and it doesn't include diodes (except for LEDs).

Re: Temperature Task
This came up at the coach's clinic I ran yesterday: don't use a mercury switch. Liquid mercury is not an authorized liquid. Only water and vinegar are allowed.Dark Sabre wrote:Someone pointed out that I was dumb and thermostats with mercury switches do have bimetallic coils
You can still use the bimatallic coil.

Re: Temperature Task
Are thermocouples allowed at all?
When it comes to the future, there are three kinds of people: those who let it happen, those who make it happen, and those who wonder what happened.

Re: Temperature Task
I'm pretty sure that's the part you're supposed to figure out on your own...
But if it helps, perhaps you could make something hot, and then blow a fan on it?

Re: Temperature Task
Really hot things cool down really quickly, and it's really easy to make something really hot. (Think bimetallic strip, as Dark Sabre suggested.)bhsscioly wrote:How can we effectively cool down an object QUICKLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????????????????

Re: Temperature Task
You can also discharge a can of compressed air. Those things get very cold as they decompress - ideal gas law and all.
Just don't turn the can upside down. The liquid that squirts out is not authorized

Re: Temperature Task
If we do use a bimetallic strip for this and we heat it up with a Nichrome wire what kind of gauge would work the best? i hear theres a like hair thin 40 gauge and a much thicker like a coat hanger 14 gauge which one would heat the bimetallic strip up the fastest with the least amount of voltage?
also i have never used a bimetallic strip, when they cool would they cool with enough force to toggle or push in a swtich? like the one pictured in http://scioly.org/wiki/Bimetallic_strip ?
thanks for the help!
