I remember using my hands for a competition because the sand was so wet... there was an audible *plunk* when the sand was dropped so just went to the good ol' hand dump method...

As far as airborne particles, we just sifted out the smaller particles to select for the largest bits. The larger pieces worked best in the auto-loader, and didn't fly around.
