Are there any forum posts about Troy's wind turbine? I'd be interested to know more.
Also, wikipedia says that Polyurethane foam has a similarly low thermal conductivity, but is much cheaper.
Edit: Okay, not quite as close. Aerogels are clearly the best option but Polyurethane might be the next best given the price.

My teammates heard them talk about it onstage after getting their medals. It's anecdotal evidence, though, so who knows whether it was their total spending or just one turbine and how rounded the number was. Also, sorry for using such casual abbreviations like "r" and "2k."

I think that they are putting more of an emphasis on the estimation part rather than the heat retention.

Could any of you share some reputable links for buying aerogel. the main thing that comes up for me is ebay and i don't really trust it.
i am talking about enough for a build, not some liquid form

I'll leave playing around with air to you (because that's cheap!), but making a dewar seems out of the question.

I think the idea is that a better insulator is going to be more consistent and, thus, more predictable. You can make a decent device with household items only. Some of us are just wondering how to push the boundaries a bit now that they're not really there.

This ^. We discussed aerogels specifically and whether or not to prohibit them. The fact that estimation is much more important to the scoring now, along with the fact that aerogel pricing has come down quite a bit in the 4+ years since we last ran the event led us to essentially only prohibit certain 'dangerous' materials.
