I think the rules should be written so that it gives you a minimum ceiling height for each distance. Without that its a total guess as to what your angle of attack should be. The most accurate way to hit a target consistantly would be to launch the projectile high in the air and have it come down at an almost vertical angle. Also there should be a rule that it must be indoors on a level floor.

Trajectory Division B Projectile

Post by techsupport »

Last year's science olympiad rules specified a specific size range for the projectile used in the trajectory event. Last year I used a squash ball, but this year's rules only give a list of possible projectiles which does not include squash balls. What I want to know is whether this list is final and all inclusive or just a list of examples.

I did this event last year and one huge tip I have is don't make the thing really heavy. Mine ended up being between 55-60 pounds! Then we got to the competition we had to carry it down a bunch of stairs, not fun. So make it light...trust me.

We tested ours for hours the week before competition and it worked perfect then the day of the competition it would not work. We were so mad because we cant figure out why it did not work.

I would asume anything in the rule booklet is final unless there's a post about it on the FAQ for Trajectory.

Actually Trombonegirl with the amount of wallop required to send the ball the 10 m or so that the far target can be set to for C division (the 8 m in the B division still requires quite alot of power) and still make it over the close target so the heavier (within reason) the device is the more reproduceable the shot will be. This is because the device will move if it is not weighed down correctly (we used 50lbs of bricks on our device, 45 on the base of the device and one 5lb brick on the arm, you do have a point it was hard to carry around 50 lbs of bricks but we managed because it was necessary to our reproducibility)

I noticed in your signature that you are from Northern California and that you won 1st in Trajectory last year. I know the guys (guy and gal actually) who won 1st in Trajectory at the Northern California State and the National competition last year, so I am assuming that your first was at the Sacramento regionals, am I correct?

Yes I'm from the Sacramento Regional :D. I didn't compete at states :(. What Arden did between regionals and states was amazing Even if my partner and I had competed at states we, Churchill, still probably would have gotten 2nd (although it might have been alittle closer.)

Why didn't you compete at states? By the way, the only thing that Arden did with Trajectory from Regionals to State and National, was to remove the foam core that they used to hide the inner workings of the device. States was 2 perfect hits out of three shots, Nationals 3 perfect hits out of 4 shots, I'm not sure what they could do to that design to make it work any better. We can all hope that whoever was involved with that Trajectory is no longer in SO.
