Re: all star teams
This subject returns year after year and has been discussed several times by the Science Olympiad Executive Board. It is not a simple undertaking and there may be many unforeseen pitfalls to overcome. Their current opinion/policy basically states that they have considered the concept and were unable to develop a viable way to conduct an all star tournament. They extend an invitation to state/local tournament organizers to experiment with the concept and submit data as "proof of concept" that it can be made to work.
Information expressed here is solely the opinion of the author. Any similarity to that of the management or any official instrument is purely coincidental! Doing Science Olympiad since 1987!

Re: all star teams
You, my friend, are missing the point of SO. The All-Star team idea misses the point of SO also. The one reason i think it's a good idea is because due to school populations, some school don't have enough enthusiastic people to do SO, so if there was only a few people who really tried, there are no ways for them to go to nationals when competing against bigger schools with bigger funds. (this is the problem with our school: population very little)

Re: all star teams
SL is right, the point of SO is to build teamwork, and it is a team event, not like academic superbowls or whatever they happen to be called in your district, where people can compete and move on as individuals, SO is all or none

Re: all star teams
Yeah, I know that. Besides, if you made an allstar team, the world might explode from the sheer amazingness in that one team. You wouldn't want that to happen, right?

Re: all star teams
I do agree with you partially on that and know what you mean, it's just kind of frustrating when you try really hard but others barely put any effort into it.
Explosion, maybe.
Sheer Amazingness, probably not.

Re: all star teams
It is frustrating, but that's why team members should encourage each other to study.

Yeah i get that look all the time. Last year after scioly ended i asked eathousemd something about my scrambler that she'd probably know the answer to and she was all like "why do you care so much about winning? it's just for fun!! it doesn't matter at all" yeah i guess I'm the only competitive person on my team

Re: all star teams
And there's nothing wrong with that. Some people do SO just for the fun and learning, and they would not thrive in a competitive setting. Yes, it is unfortunate that you are among them, but that is just because they are different, not because they are somehow wrong...Yeah i get that look all the time.
