Re: Elevated Bridge B/C
Anyways, I return from getting balsa and bass (they had some so I decided to get some anyways even though I probably won't use it that much).
Yeah the guy there recommended we get medium CA glue, because its easier to work with.

Re: Elevated Bridge B/C
we were just talking about spelling this word in LA yesterday. I thought it was funny an adult should spell it wrong (no offense), it is one of the most commonly misspelled words.Greg Doe wrote:Spellling wasn't one of my better studies! Thanks for the correction. My students started out with bridge sides that were built from 3/32" by 1/4" balsa. Gradually we reduced the 1/4" demension until we had a failure. Exercise, exercise, exercise, exercise, exercise. I think I've got it!

Well, the single side is finished. Took me like 3 hours to do but its done.
When it says the clear span must be 45.0cm it means exactly that right?

don't worry, three hours is good. at least for me. it takes me like 6ish to do a full one.

Re: Elevated Bridge B/C
Really? It only takes me about 4 hours (not including design or getting CA off my fingers).
Well, not exactly. It can be more than 45.0cm, as long as the bridge only touches the table in the bearing zone. However, nothing can touch the table within that 45.0cm clear zone or past the 5.0cm bearing zone on either side.fmtiger124 wrote:When it says the clear span must be 45.0cm it means exactly that right?

Re: Elevated Bridge B/C
Mine took me more like 5 hours hehe..... (Well 2 of those were designing on graph paper, which I was being too ridiculous about). And then, measuring and cutting off small portions of the balsa and bass wood was quite tedious, once I had all the cut outs and design, it only took me like an hour.
And my clear span is just a little bit more than 45 cm, like 45.4cm... hopefully they won't care.

I included design in the 3, the actual truss itself took like 2.AlphaTauri wrote:Really? It only takes me about 4 hours (not including design or getting CA off my fingers).
EDIT:
Mine was initially 2-3cm over. I know what I did but I had to add a small attachment to the insides to make it 45--it was too late to go and redo the problem.RandomPerson52 wrote: And my clear span is just a little bit more than 45 cm, like 45.4cm... hopefully they won't care.
It was a lot bigger than I thought it would be---I guess I'm used to seeing B bridges but you have to make the bridge fairly long to cover the clear span and the clearance block

Re: Elevated Bridge B/C
As for the span, no part of the bridge can touch the table inside 45cm, and no part can touch the table outside 50cm. So if the inside of your legs are at 45 to (55-width of wood) apart, they are legal. So fm, your 47cm bridge was legal.
EDIT: oops, that was supposed to be 45-55.

Re: Elevated Bridge B/C
Wouldn't it be 55cm, since there's a 5cm bearing zone on each side?
And yeah, the 47cm bridge was perfectly fine. I always build mine with the clear span slightly longer than required, so I won't have any problems with overzealous event sups.

Re: Elevated Bridge B/C
Don't you mean the longest possible length your bridge can be is 55cm? The 45 (or greater I guess) with nothing touching the table and then the 5cm zones for your legs to sit inblue cobra wrote:As for the span, no part of the bridge can touch the table inside 45cm, and no part can touch the table outside 50cm. EDIT: did't see aplhas post.
Well the pieces I added are easily detachable so I can get rid of them if the span can be greater. So if i remove them and have a span of about 47 thats ok? alright then....I'll get rid of them later.
