Would it be fine to make my own wood jig? I don't think I'll be able to spend that much time and money on 3-d printing Balsa Engineering's, but I want to have something to work off of. They're all just for structure, right?

If you have access to a 3D printer, use it. I guess you could make your own jig, but it wouldn't be as accurate and might result in an uneven structure (any preexisting warps or unevenness results in the load being spread unequally).

I just don't think my school budget / 3d printer requests would be very happy with that magnitude of a 3d printing job. Would it work if I just hollowed it out on the files?

Is the jig solid? If so you can definitely cut a significant amount of the inside out. I'd be worried about how it'd print, though(supports inside? No base, maybe). Also be careful that you don't cut too much out.
