Event Supervisor Review

And we're back! Hello everyone, my name is Robert Lee and I was the event supervisor for Astronomy C with April Cheng, Pranit Mohnot, and Sahil Pontula. It's exciting to finally be back after just a short 19 month hiatus. Thank you to all of the teams that made it out to UT Austin and the tournament directors that made this all possible.

Astronomy C

Statistics:
Mean: 32.5 (19.1%)
Median: 21 (12.4%)
St. Dev.: 23.6
Max: 96.5 (56.8%)

Thoughts:
As this was the first invitational of the season, we may have overestimated the preparedness of the competitors. However, we hope you all can use this test as a springboard to start looking into the new topics this year. Notably, start researching the DSOs early! A lot of teams left Section B completely empty The DSOs this year are super cool in my opinion and the conclusions astronomers have come to are quite exciting. Also, Section C contained many foundational calculation questions that teams should study up on. A good place to start is the formula sheet on the Scioly wiki.

Event Supervisor Review: Codebusters B/C

Hey everyone, I'm Lalith Roopesh, and here's a really quick review of the Codebusters B/C exam, which I wrote with Oriana Pineda. First, to address the elephant in the room, sorry for not using Toebes formatting. When writing the test we noticed that the Toebes test generator hadn't implemented the Porta cipher and hadn't fully implemented the Rail Fence cipher, so we decided to manually write the test instead. No worries, we tried each question and had only one error at the competition, which I will go into later.

The test was overall pretty hefty (32 questions for C and 27 for B), and we tried to cover every topic in Regionals rules. The aim was to create a test that would not be full-scored (but maybe could be close) at the National-level last year, so now at the beginning of the season, teams definitely seemed a bit out of practice. Finally, the updates to the rules allowed for some pretty interesting questions, for example, #26 on C. I would love to see if tricky questions like these could be taken further.

Errors:

Since we didn't use Toebes, there ended up being one error (that we know of) in the exam:
- #2 B/C - "FALCON" was misspelled as "FALOCN", credit was given to both answers during the exam.
- If more are found, it will be added.

Scores:

Again, scores seem low, which I assume is due to the first invite of the season. If not, please tell me in the feedback form (linked below).

Solar System B

Hey folks, I was the Event Supervisor for Solar System at the UT Invitational. You can find the exam here.

Here's a histogram of the scores, along with some statistics:



Standard deviation: 25.58
Average: 54.05
Median: 54.0
Maximum: 112.0

As the National Event Supervisor for Solar System, I wrote this exam as a "practice" for the Nationals exam. As a result, I am not particularly surprised that the scores are a little low, especially since it's the beginning of the year. Nevertheless, I hope that this exam can provide students and coaches alike with a good resource for the event.

Tournaments generally do not release the full set of raw scores. UT said they will be releasing the score histogram though, so you will be able to see the distribution.
