Socorro High 2021 Div. B Invitational

Hello! I was the WICI B test writer for the Socorro Invitational. Here are the overall score distributions:



*The total number of points is 1307 not because there were 1307 different criteria of the model I was grading, but because each criteria was given a different number of points (for example, using an object would give you 7 points, while putting that object in its correct location gave you another 10 points). If anyone’s curious, I graded the entire model based on 149 different criteria ranging from 3 points to 15 points each.

Notes:
There wasn’t a particular part that a majority of people had trouble with--the light stand was one a lot of people got full points on, as well as the red stick that connected the top layer and the bottom layer. I think that the three blue half-circles were too vague; they were actually three different types of shapes (a half-circle, a cushion, and a squashed sphere) which I realize now were basically indistinguishable in the screenshots the writer received. This was the first time I used TinkerCAD for WICI and I was surprised about how well (mostly) things went. The submission through Google Forms was a new submission format I tried out for the first time at Socorro so I appreciate that everyone worked with it well.

Hi everyone! HugoTroop and Froggie, Malikaow1004, Sciolyperson, and RiverWalker88 were able to have the pleasure of co-writing Machines/Science Quiz Bowl. Here are some notes and data points regarding how competitors did.

Notes:
It was pleasing to see that most teams had attempted a large majority of the IMA marathon. One of the things that was surprising was the lack of attempts at the pulley questions, though I also believe a majority of teams ran out of time when reaching section 4. In hindsight we probably could have put more multiple choice or multiple select options that would have been quicker for both students and us.
Tried to put a reasonable amount of conceptual questions and not make it too math-heavy.
Every question was legitimately attempted by at least one team
Did the best we could on section 5, maybe could’ve made it more intuitive or clear
The spread is a bit more than I was hoping or anticipated. There’s clearly some jumps in the distribution, which I think are just due to speed and effectiveness rather than one specific question or section being worth too many points.

v fun to write, came together extremely quickly so some topics definitely got glossed over
Earthquake intensity question got almost everyone
Histogram definitely skewed, and the fewer participants (only 14) only exaggerated this. Although the scores seem to be grouped around a multiple of 25 plus 10 (as 25 points was the number of points per section), most teams seemed to have somewhat similar scores across sections, although Earth/Space Science seemed to perform the worst. Whether this is down to it being last on the test or teams having less understanding, I’m not sure. No team answered an entire section correctly, either, iirc. Physics was bad bc a 10th grader who hasn’t even taken ap physics 1 wrote many of the questions

Hey y'all.

For those of you looking for an update on this, unfortunately Socorro High will not be hosting an invitational tournament in the 2022 season. One of the main people behind it has become a busy, overcommitted senior, and good tournaments take time to put together. Sorry for any inconvenience!
