But it's impossible to attach it dead center, and it will pull the rocket to the side. It's a good idea, but not very reliable. What I'm gonna do is find a building with a slanted ceiling, then measure the heights with a laser for different spots, then just YOLO psi measurements for different heights.

Maybe attaching a fishing line to the side of the bottle would work? I would try to measure out a pre-measured fishing line, with small tape attached in 100 cm or 50 cm increments. Once the rocket is launched one could get a ball park measurement of the line that was unrolled. It would be crude, but for some more effective. Just an idea I had in my head.

It won't be precise, and the string might pull it off course.

Ping Pong Parachute B/C

Post by JonKim »

Would tape wrapped all the way around the bottle to secure fins be considered altering the bottle's structural integrity?

d.The nose of the rocket must be rounded or blunt at the tip and designed such that when a standard bottle cap (~3.1 cm
diameter x 1.25 cm tall) is placed on top of the nose, no portion of the nose touches the inside top of the bottle cap (see
Figure 1).

To satisfy this rule, can the ping pong ball be the top-most rounded portion of the rocket but then detach? Otherwise, if the top of the rocket is blunt, how does one attach the ping pong ball?

But based on rule 5c:

c. When called to launch, teams will load their rocket onto the launcher. Once the rocket is loaded, but
NOT pressurized, teams will place the parachute payload system on or in the rocket. After the payload
parachute system is loaded it cannot be manipulated.

So it seems like the ping pong ball is separate from the rocket in which case it seems like the rocket itself needs a blunt nose apart from the ping pong ball?

My thoughts as well. According to the rules there is a clear distinction between the "rocket", which must have a blunt nose, and the parachute, which must be attached to a ping pong ball.

Yes. This must be a safety thing - nobody wants pointy missiles flying around.

Yeah, this is probably meant mainly for when the rocket is coming back down, either toward the ground or accidentally toward people.

Hey everyone,

I know anything regarding rules discussed on this forum isn't official, but just want to get your opinions. In the rules it said that only tape may be used, but do you think we're allowed to for example slide a perfectly fitting 3-d printed part onto the rocket? No adhesives will be used. (It stays since it tightly fits on the rocket)

Looking forward to working with everyone and a fun year of launching rockets. :geek: :geek: :geek:
