So you're saying that the warming and acidification of the oceans, with their tremendous effect on marine ecosystems around the world, is not an "important topic"?Pastaman202 wrote: ↑September 8th, 2019, 3:56 pmI still don’t understand why they would take glaciers away because it is probably the most important DP topic these days, with global warming and all. Re: Dynamic Planet B/C
The large inflow of cold freshwater from melting land glaciers disturbs oceanic circulation, which makes these issues worse. He didn't say they're not important, he just said that glaciers are more important.SciolyMaster wrote: ↑September 8th, 2019, 5:04 pmSo you're saying that the warming and acidification of the oceans, with their tremendous effect on marine ecosystems around the world, is not an "important topic"?Pastaman202 wrote: ↑September 8th, 2019, 3:56 pmI still don’t understand why they would take glaciers away because it is probably the most important DP topic these days, with global warming and all. Re: Dynamic Planet B/C
I think they took it away because of how narrow the topic was/ event supervisors had a hard time writing the tests. I felt that most of the tests were either very similar or focused on topics not really within the realm of the event. I'm super excited for oceanography! (Even though tectonics is my fav)Pastaman202 wrote: ↑September 8th, 2019, 3:56 pmI still don’t understand why they would take glaciers away because it is probably the most important DP topic these days, with global warming and all. They did not take it away. It just rotated out normally.Molybon wrote: ↑September 9th, 2019, 8:07 amI think they took it away because of how narrow the topic was/ event supervisors had a hard time writing the tests. Re: Dynamic Planet B/C
Yes, Dynamic is now a 1 year rotation, meaning 2021 is tectonics and hopefully 2022 is back to glaciers unless they bring freshwater back in.Unome wrote: ↑September 9th, 2019, 10:28 amThey did not take it away. Re: Dynamic Planet B/C
I notice that some of the topics in Dynamic Planet (like Pacific decadal oscillation or Ekman) had some calculus/differential equations/partial differential equations in the wikipedia. Is this something to worry about?

Re: Dynamic Planet B/C
Doing the same topic for your 2nd year actually gives quite the head start on people who have just entered the event. I'm not sure how it shapes up for other events, but that effect is quite pronounced in DyPlan. That's also most likely why many people dislike the change; they already had a lot of their studying done (with the exception of people like Umaroth who just like glaciers for the fun of it

Re: Dynamic Planet B/C
If I recall correctly from when he addressed our room, the Div B nats proctor said it was also to provide a logical transition from Meteorology: Climate -> Dynamic Planet: Glaciers -> Dynamic Planet: Oceanography, but I don't 100% remember if he exactly said that. Also yes I love glaciersl0lit wrote: ↑September 9th, 2019, 8:38 pmDoing the same topic for your 2nd year actually gives quite the head start on people who have just entered the event.
