Motorstick Length

Post by OpticsNerd »

Anyone know the benefits and drawbacks of longer motor sticks(Specifically the distance between the propeller hook and the rear hook)?

Benefits: With this year's likely long motors, a long motor stick will maintain higher torque later in the flight, and will not be as likely to ball up the knots.

Downside: A longer motor stick, especially with the heavier rubber that may be used with the large prop, may have a tendency to flex, changing the plane's trim. This may be countered with bracing or carbon. MS tends to be a thick cross section, so weight can also become an issue.

How long do you mean by "long motor". Right now I'm using the freedom flight kit with an extra 2 inches of motor stick length on an unmodified 24 cm flaring prop. I'm getting great results with it but I'm very sure that a 2.17-gram loop of 0.102 rubber doesn't count as "long".

While we are still testing with half rubber, I have seen people reporting 3g or so of rubber

Wow, okay. Maybe I should try heavier rubber soon.

depends on how much power your plane needs, only increase if you have too little power
it's not about the medals; go out there and have fun. make progress, learn a few things and have one heck of a time; that's all that matters.
