1/4 inch is really big, and probably heavy...

I used 1/4in rod last year and it worked fine. So long as you select your rod carefully, you can get pretty light axles. Further, since the radius of the axle is pretty small, it doesn't add much rotational inertia, so it doesn't hurt your acceleration too much.

How much did each axle weigh? Also, what material were they made of?

Watch the grade of aluminum. 1,000 series is way too weak/soft. 6061 is probably the most common good one. If in doubt do some homework on the internet to find a suitable grade.

I ordered mine from banebot back in the day (wow 2 years ago). Check the different wheel durometers, 30A and 40A are both good enough imo. 50A is not as soft as I would personally like them to be, but they would be fine too.

I just got off the phone with Banebot customer service and they are not sure when or if the t40 2-7/8 wheels are coming but he said the thicker wheels are in stock

The thicker wheels are significantly heavier and you will see a pretty large impact on acceleration and weight. If you have old devices that you can steal the T40 wheels off of, that would be a good idea until you can get your hands on them. Amazon apparently has 2 in stock for whoever gets to them first.
