Thoughts on MIT anyone? Congrats to Harriton for putting up a good show, as per usual. And 19th at MIT is not too shabby Conestoga. But what in the world is up with Penncrest? 42nd? Hm... :?:

I believe they didn't send an actual team, maybe conflicts came up or something

That seems to be the most plausible explanation, but it's also MIT - what could possibly take precedence over MIT?

Penncrest is also competing at Princeton and Penn; it's entirely possible that they knew they were not likely to challenge for a top spot even with a full team, and with two more tough invitationals coming up against more PA competition, they could definitely have decided to not force a full-strength team. Plus, they'll still have the tests from the tournament after-the-fact. Their future invitational results will likely yield a clearer picture on what to expect from them strength-wise.

Aside from them and Harriton (looks great as expected; builds seem to be the weak point but I expect those to improve), here's a look at the other PA teams:

Conestoga - (19th/546 and 26th/683) - looks strong again, had a better conglomerate score than Boca Raton and Mentor. I wouldn't say it was a groundbreaking performance, but they do look like a strong contender to challenge for 2nd once again.
North Pocono - (40th/869 and 46th/985) - conglomerate score of 764. Tough to tell, but looks about in line with what would be expected of them, perhaps a little bit higher. Again looks like a contender for the NEPA crown and the back end of the PA top 10.
B Reed Henderson - (69th/1516) - I get the idea behind going to tough invitationals, but I'm not sure how much more Henderson got from this that they couldn't have gotten at a closer invitational like Penn or Princeton. There were 7 no-shows plus 1 DQ, and their highest place was 47th. Plus it's interesting to me that they were the only one of the three West Chester schools (Rustin and WC East) that attended it. But, more power to them for wanting the best possible tournament, I suppose. I don't see them contending for a states qualification spot.

First of all, it is MIT. Just as a field trip I would take students to go there. Secondly, getting to see teams/students from all over with a competition that size and at that caliber in an experience on its own. The opportunity to get to meet students from around the country is great. There are many teams that won't be lucky enough to qualify for Nationals this year but for those teams to be at a competition that has been stated many times to be like a warm up to nationals this is a great experience. Any of these reasons on there own would be enough of a justification for a team to go.

Regarding closer invitationals many of them filled up quickly not as fast as MIT but still relatively fast. So a team like WC East that is 20 minutes from BVF was on the wait list because of how quickly it filled up. In a similar way Penn and Princeton filled up quickly. Also two of these were on a holiday weekend and teams might not have been able to have students confirmed that they would attend.

While Henderson didn't do that well keep in mind that we don't know the whole story. My guess is that they didn't bring a full team. That could be do to funding or interest. Or it could be from last minute illness or some other emergency. That alone would make it rough. I don't see the DQ you referred to and 3 of the NS are from building events which maybe weren't ready or could not transport.

Rustin did not attend because we initially only were granted one team and by the time we got the extra spot from the wait list we had already committed to going to Solon and had canceled our bus reservation for that weekend which proved difficult to get back.

All of that being said I think your predictions of Conestoga being a contender in PA for the 2nd place spot, North Pocono being in the PA top 10, and Henderson not qualifying out of the tough SEPA regional all seem like the smart bet.

Those are fair points; I guess I'm far enough removed at this point that I forgot that there's a draw in being at a university's campus beyond just a college visit. And if the funds are there, then by all means teams can use that. From a competitive aspect it feels as though the team may have been in over their heads, but I'm sure that from an experience standpoint there was a great deal to gain.

Also it's my bad for being a little careless in my nomenclature; it was not a DQ but rather a Participation placing for (I assume) not being able to run a device. They correctly did not receive a full FQ in any of their events.
