Any idea of the weight of your device with and without rubber? I can't get over a minute.

2.502 gram helicopter weight. Not sure what the weight of the rubber is since I don't weigh it (I keep track of the length instead and I don't remember the exact length of the one used in that flight).

Nice Flight! I usually keep track of the rubber by weight so my torque graphs are accurate, since there may be discrepancies in weight if you go by length and if it provides the same torque, the flight will be a bit different. Just my 2 cents though, as I only got a rough estimate of rubber weight optimized for my helicopter.

(Hello all I'm new to scioly and the forums)

Woooah that's really good and really really light :O I only got about 39 seconds at our first invitational this year. My helicopters are also kind of heavy and I'm not really sure what to do to make a new one that's lighter ;__; I'm also struggling with rubber motor length stuff because longer rubber bands just didn't really work at all at the competition even though I thought they were fine before... I saw the posts that said motor length doesn't correlate with body stick length but I just really don't know what I'm doing because the longer ones start to get loose and start getting stuck against the body so they just stop unwinding...?

Bazinga+ if you don't mind, could I ask how long your body sticks are? And are your rubber motors like a lot longer than the body sticks or about the same or..? You don't have to answer this if you don't want to give away too much information.

(Also, is the image gallery working for anyone? Since the beginning of the year, it's always taken me to either "page does not exist" or some hotel website and I'm not really sure what to do...)

Congratulations on your efforts so far. You may already have done this, but I would suggest that you read every previous year Scioly.org wiki helicopter forum. This doesn't really take very long as many posts are simple in nature and can be skimmed. Posts by experienced competitors and by experienced coaches give many tips that would help with your questions.

Jeff Anderson has written some good advice in this and previous year's wikis regarding building to weight. Filtering the wiki for his posts and reading them all would get you a good start. Knowing the dimensions of the wood and the density of the wood (calculated from size and weight, of course) that you are planning on using will quickly tell you if your heli will be at or below minimum weight. Getting to minimum weight is very important.

FYI - the Freedom Flight kit helicopter fuselage is 16" long and is a very clever design. The four high schools that I am coaching are all using this kit, with a few modifications, and it flies very well.

If you ask specific question and give the details of your helicopter (and maybe pictures), it will be possible for myself and others to give you specific suggestions.

Thanks for the tips! I've looked through the forums but I'm really a complete beginner so I'm just doing a lot of trial and error. I borrowed a scale from my school when I made my first attempts, but I was still kind of struggling to get the weight down. I'll try again before the next competition and hopefully make a lighter one.

I don't plan to get the kit, but wow I didn't know it was that long?? How is it still light? Mine was a lot shorter which I think lead to balance problems too... I'm going to keep messing around and see if anything works out, and if not, I'll probably post some pictures... thanks!

I didn't use the 2017 freedom flight kit since I have various objections against many of the design choices. Instead I built a helicopter using the 2014 freedom flight ribs and my own custom ordered wood.

Got a time of 1:52 in an ~8 feet high classroom at the Kenston Invitational today, earning second place. It's built straight from the FFM kit, with 4 and 2. I didn't do an excessive amount of testing so wasn't sure where the max winds of the motors were, but I'm sure that I could have gotten plenty more winds in if I had done more testing, which I will definitely be doing in the near future.

Recently got 1:58 on a 1.4 meter ceiling (tested at my house) and 200 winds under the rubber's max. Judging off how slowly it descended (6-7 sec per meter), it should get around 2:40 on my schools 7 meter gym ceiling (can probably reach 3 minutes on a 10-11 meter ceiling ).

Errr...are you sure you mean 1.4? Since that's shorter than the height of a lot of people... I myself am 1.7 meters tall. I don't think a 1.4 meter ceiling would be usable.

But regardless, impressive time!
