I'd argue quite vehemently that you should NOT count the spring. lets say the spring starts perfectly horizontal. As the mass falls and the spring is stretched, it may indeed move up, and then back down. However, it started flat, ends flat, so no change in gravitational potential energy.

On where can you start the vehicle - I asked for a clarification since if you go by the letter of the wording the tip of the egg has to be ON the start point, meaning the tip of the egg is touching the ground.

I also asked if it has to be directly above the center of the little piece of tape, or can it be scooted all the way to the edge. No response yet.
I definately agree with you that the spring should not count. If anything the mass of the spring makes you have less energy since if you look at the starting and ending positions, the main mass falls from the top hight to the bottom, but the spring will start extended and then compress towards the top, meaning that the center of mass if the spring actually moved UP which means energy from the falling mass must've been used to move the spring up.
If I remember correctly 2 years ago the spring on my launcher was not included in the mass at any of the competitions, 3 of which were run by Bro Nie. They may have changed it this year though, so wait for a clarification to be safe.

Curious as to whether others see this is as an issue:

Rule 2a - Dimension of the Scrambler (total unit) can be up to 0.9 meters in length
Rule 5e - The pointed tip of the egg must start on the Start Point. Other parts of the Scrambler (except the egg) may be in front of the Start Point...
Rule 4d - The photogate timing system... is installed (with the first laser) at the 0.50m line

Compared to last year Division B where the vehicle and egg could be well behind the start line, and assuming your vehicle is less than 0.4 meters in length and trying to take advantage of the full length of the EPS allowed (0.9 meters), is there a risk of the EPS extending out into the track (per Rule 5e) that then interferes with the photogate timing system? Is that considered a Construction Violation? A Competition Violation? Or would the ES have to offer a secondary method of timing the scrambler run?

Thanks in advance.

You also need to keep rule 2.f. in mind about the egg being the foremost point of the ETV. The purpose of 5.e. is to allow for angled starts, since the angle might result in a wheel or something being slightly forward.

So 5.e is meant to allow for parts of the ETV to be in front of the line, but not the EPS? I always interpreted it as the other way around, since it says "device" (which I took to be a roundabout way of talking about the EPS without mentioning it directly).

Good point. This isn't the place for official statements as usual. I'd think 5.e. does allow for the EPS, which means that the issue about interfering with the photo gates is a legitimate one. My advice is to not push your luck and to design the EPS to NOT potentially interfere. If I were running the event, I personally wouldn't issue a penalty if it did, but would need to revert to manual timing, which is less accurate.

Also known as a quick release. It's a device that allows you to release something that is under tension via a latch that requires a very minimal amount of force. Google can help show some examples: https://www.google.com/search?q=archery ... UQ_AUICCgD
