Possibly. I don't know much about funding, since Chattahoochee gets (as far as I'm aware, which isn't really that far) basically nothing from the district.maxxxxx wrote:It could be due to a lack of funding for the club, which seems to be happening even in well funded school districts.Unome wrote:Ok... so maybe I can understand a team that's been to Nationals for a while dropping out, but why would a first-year nationals team quit!?Adi1008 wrote:

Re: Ohio 2016
I think that while funding is a big problem for a lot of teams (including BDJH and SLHS), it wasn't the reason that Cinco Ranch SO ended.Unome wrote:Possibly. I've heard the following as reasons, but I can't really confirm if they're true since I personally don't know anybody from there:
-The coach's wife got cancer
-A lot of parents were angry that their child did not make the state/nationals team, and eventually the coach got fed up and decided to quit
-The school disbanded it (I really don't think this one is true at all, since the team was only getting better and better)
I'm not sure which one(s) is/are true, but if the coach's wife really did get cancer, my thoughts are out to them and I hope she gets better soon
Hopefully, Cinco Ranch SO will get started up again after some time. I think that if they had a few more years, they could have become a national powerhouse, much like Beckendorff did.

I will just flat out say that I feel bad for you all with that level of competition, so good luck.PianoDoc wrote:The state competition is in 2 weeks. Thoughts on team performances? All I can say is that Division C is going to be very interesting.

Since nobodies posted it yet, the Ohio State results are available here: tiny.cc/ohso
And in the interest of full transparency, I'll point out that we had a scoring error (which I take full, personal responsibility for) in how we applied a penalty in Electric Vehicle. As a result of that, Mentor was announced at the award's ceremony as being the 2nd place team (and going to Nationals), while Centerville was the 4th place team. Someone from the Mentor team had the great integrity to immediately point out this error at the end of the ceremony, which after correcting resulted in Centerville coming in 2nd place overall and Mentor in 3rd. We have a clearly documented policy similar to that at Nationals that says results are tentative until 1 hour after the ceremony.
I'm heartbroken about the emotional rollercoaster this put all the students involved in, and hope it doesn't discourage anyone from future participation in Science Olympiad.
